Goal Setting with Enneagram

I love the first week of every new year. I love setting goals. Planning and thinking about the future is one of my favorite activities. I love bullet journalling and exploring ideas for upcoming adventures. In other words, I’m a classic Seven in Enneagram. The Enthusiast Type. To go a layer deeper, I’m a 7 with an 8 wing so I’m more likely to share intimately and honestly. Go figure.

As opposed to other personality typing, what I enjoy most about Enneagram is the focus on growth. Reflecting nine primary personality types, Enneagram teaches that while a person’s fears, desires and motivations are fixed, your behavior and reactions in times of stress or prosperity can enjoy much more flexibility - for better or worse - depending on how ‘healthy’ you are in your type.

There are some fantastic resources available for not only typing yourself with Enneagram, but also learning more about how to practice self-care and grow into the healthiest version of your type. Here are the ones I like:

  • Explore Your Type - A free typing test that’s fairly extensive; about 80 questions. Best to answer quickly and as honestly as you can for the most accurate typing.

  • The Enneagram Institute - a great reference of types and the Enneagram system.

  • @justmyenneatype - this Instagram account has beautiful visualizations of each type and exploring different dimensions.

  • The Road Back to You - this was the first book I purchased on the topic. It’s a quick read with valuable guidance on developing deeper self-awareness.

For 2019, I’ve considered how I might use my Ennegram to inform my plans and goals. Here are a few I’ve come up with:

  • As a Seven, I get joy from frequent travel and planning. I’ve put 5 on the calendar so far, ranging from Italy with my husband to D.C. with college girlfriends to a week at a family cabin in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.

  • As a Seven, I’m fulfilled by acquisitive behaviors. I’ve developed a detailed financial savings and spending plan and committed to tracking this on a weekly basis.

  • As a Seven, I fear negative emotions and anxiety. To recognize these feelings and acknowledge their place in my life, I’ll be heavily journaling my experience with Yoga Teacher Training to get the most out of a personal development experience.
