December 2012 — Construction paper ideas for data and visuals that we refined, evaluated and implemented.

This project was launched with two primary issues in mind:

  1. Our department collected a significant amount of data that was never seen nor utilized with the exception of a small group of executive leaders.

  2. There were several innovative projects active across the organization and there was no venue to highlight those efforts.

Our team worked with several vendor partners and a team of individuals from facilities, construction, marketing, information services and analytics in order implement a digital signage solution that would address these issues. The major phases of this project were definition of the solution, installation of hardware and software, and go-live with custom graphics and dynamic data visualizations.

Our primary design guideline was the message had to be timed "for a cup of coffee." The signage was installed in a high-traffic area where employees came to grab their morning coffee. Therefore, the message had to be clear and the visual had to be large and eye-catching.

A challenge with this product was determining how to measure success. While we implemented on schedule and under budget, we needed to show ongoing value. We devised a high-fidelity prototype out of a Raspberry Pi and a repurposed hand sanitizer stand that allowed viewers to respond to a posted prompt about their impression of this signage by pushing a button.

This was my first adventure in product management. I managed the initial development project from scoping and budgeting, through vendor selection and contracting, directed design and development and led ongoing messaging and hardware maintenance.

My signature on this project was the design direction. I facilitated "construction paper brainstorms" that asked team members to draw their idea for a visual, message and required data using colored construction paper. This made visual design accessible to all of our key stakeholders, no matter their artistic talent! We collaboratively evaluated the ideas with our vendors for complexity, priority and ease of implementation. For ideas that floated to the top, I worked with our vendor partners to turn them into graphics and data visuals. I provided design critique, wireframe approval and implementation management.
